Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Building Code Official to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will support the continued development and evolution of critical infrastructure at Berkeley Lab. This position, within the Facilities Engineering Department, will manage the code compliance program and serves as the authority having jurisdiction over the building permit and inspection processes at Berkeley Lab. The Building Code Official (BCO) will help ensure consistent implementation of the Engineering Department's core function, which is to deliver mission-ready, safe, sustainable and highly reliable infrastructure and utilities to the Lab's world-class user facilities and research programs. Berkeley Lab is home to 16 Nobel Prizes, credited with the discovery of 16 elements on the periodic table and the place where nearly 4,000 dedicated professionals choose to work.
What You Will Do:
- The BCO establishes procedures to conduct the appropriate reviews and inspections to enforce compliance with applicable codes and federal regulations.
- Develop, implement and evaluate processes, systems, and procedures to achieve Department goals, objectives, and work standards.
- Manage in-house staff, consultant plans examiners and building inspectors.
- Provide leadership and work with staff and consultants to ensure a high performance, customer service-oriented work environment through selection, training, and day-to-day management practices that supports the department's and the Lab's mission, objectives and values.
- Work effectively to build cooperative relationships with other Laboratory operations areas to ensure code compliance while maintaining alignment with the Laboratory's mission to make significant investments to repair, maintain, and upgrade existing infrastructure and buildings.
- May serve on committees or perform other duties as assigned.
What is Required:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, public administration or engineering technology or a related field; Master's Degree (Preferred) and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience including 5 years recent full-time experience managing technical plan reviews, permitting processes, and construction inspection for a local, state or federal entity responsible for fire or building code regulations.
- The BCO shall possess or obtain certification as an ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) within six months of hire.
- Demonstrated experience managing plan review and building inspection processes, including supervision of administrative and technical staff.
- Demonstrated experience refining existing and developing new work processes, procedures and policies related to plan review, permitting and/or building inspection services.
- Strong understanding of fire protections systems, fire alarm and notification systems, complex building designs, egress systems, accessibility and sustainability.
- Hands-on experience with computers, proficient with software applications related to design review processing, document and information management.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to promote customer relations through collaborating with customers and colleagues, including senior internal and external contacts.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to independently make sound judgments and develop creative solutions to complex problems.
- Excellent project management skills to develop detailed work plans and schedules to meet desired goals and objectives.
- Ability to research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing to all levels of an organization.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive administrative and technical reports.
- Talent for working well under pressure and handling multiple tasks to achieve broadly defined group and institutional goals.
- Ability to manage, train and develop staff and contracted support in order to keep pace with a growing demand for services.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience on the interpretation and enforcement of building codes and standards related to DOE Orders.
- ICC Certification for Mechanical/Plumbing Inspector.
- ICC Certification for Electrical Inspector.
- Licensed professional engineer or architect in the State of California.
- California Division of State Architect - CASp Certification.
Notes:
- This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- Budgeted Salary is $187,944 - $229,704
- This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

- This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
