Job Description

Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service Standards and specifications. Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.(***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
Brief Description of Duties: The Maintenance Assistant will provide maintenance service to the campus community. For all duties of the position, the incumbent must maintain the work area in a clean and safe manner. Knowledge of and the ability to use required hand and power tools. All assigned tasks will be accomplished in a timely and appropriate manner. Work involves occasional exposure to elements like inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
- Perform semi-skilled maintenance activities including, but not limited to, repairing doors, windows, window sashes, storm windows, stairs, railings, furniture, and door hardware.
- Operate hand and power tools; operate shop machinery to make and assemble bookcases, shelves, tables, trenches, signs, and modular furniture.
- Operate a fleet of State vehicles for Residential Mailroom parcel transport to each residential mailroom location on the East and West campus, as well as transfers of parcels between mailroom locations.
- Operate vehicles, on and off State property, and operate forklift/electric jacks in assisting in placement of supplies/fixtures/furniture.
- Follow departmental guidelines, and policies regarding job duties, work rules, safety completion of work, and wear the proper safety equipment. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Computer literacy with email, Google Office applications, and department-specific database with barcode scanning technology.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair/replacement of Residence Hall appliances including microwave ovens, microfridges, ranges, and refrigerators.
- Performs routine maintenance of laundry equipment and installation of new equipment by cutting, fitting, and threading pipe, and removing existing piping and fixtures. Locating and unclogging stoppages.
- Perform routine inspections of electrical systems, including testing outlets for proper voltage, grounding, and polarity to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Utilize electrical testing equipment to identify and troubleshoot faulty outlets, including GFCI functionality.
- Repairs and lubricates casters on racks and carts using appropriate grease guns and can lubricants.
- Supervise work crews of relatively unskilled student workers by making assignments, giving instructions, and aiding in performing tasks.
- Maintain departmental vehicles; report to the Coordinator of Warehouse Operations to schedule service with Campus Automotive Services whenever necessary.
- Perform manual work associated with the routine maintenance and cleaning of the warehouse.
- Occasional assistance with other maintenance activities, such as snow and ice control.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 9 Hiring Rate $42,641, Job Rate $52,413. This position includes location pay of $4,000 per year.
