Hillcrest Country Club located in Los Angeles, California is seeking a hands-on, self-starter to join their team as Assistant Agronomist. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative and innovative management team to be the best-conditioned golf course in Los Angeles as well as the most technologically advanced golf maintenance operation in the country.
Hillcrest is neighbors with fellow world-class golf clubs; The Los Angeles Country Club, Riviera Golf Club, and Bel Air Country Club on the west side of Los Angeles. This location boasts mild temperatures, 300 days of sun, and great proximity to beaches, studios, and all the great things Los Angeles has to offer.
In 2018, Hillcrest Country Club embarked on a full-course renovation with world-renowned architect Kyle Phillips. The new Hillcrest includes new practice facilities, 5 holes par 3 courses, and an 18 hole 7200-yard championship golf course. Greens are pure distinction creeping bentgrass, Santa Ana Bermudagrass fairways, and Perennial ryegrass rough.
The Agronomy Department is currently constructing a state-of-the-art irrigation water project and planning a new maintenance facility within 5 years. The Assistant Agronomist will support the Director of Agronomy and Superintendent in the day-to-day management of the Club's Golf Course Maintenance department. This includes but is not limited to:

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF POSITION:

Acclimate with the various technologies in operation including gaining comfort using Toro electric greens mowers, 3 GPS sprayers, Rainbird Irrigation system running Cirrus Pro licensure for drone technology.
Aid the Director of Agronomy with the development of sustainability and technology goals with an eye toward continuous improvement, greater efficiency, and environmental stewardship
KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, APTITUDE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensuring standards: Establish and enforce presentation standards for the golf course and grounds. Train and supervise the team, conducting regular inspections and taking corrective actions when necessary.
Budget management: Manage annual and capital budgets, ensuring targets are met. Provide input on operating and labor budgets during the budgeting process.
Maintain accurate records, ensure proper equipment use and maintenance, and update applicator licenses.
Green Committee involvement: Actively participate in Green Committee meetings. Ensure alignment on goal development and execution.
Management and Supervisory:
Staff supervision: Directly supervise designated staff and assist in managing all department staff and facilities. Foster an employee-oriented culture focused on quality, continuous improvement, and high performance.
Scheduling and assignments: Create schedules for designated staff, assign work, and ensure appropriate breaks and approvals for overtime.
Meetings and walk-throughs: Conduct pre and post-shift meetings, motivate the team, and promote teamwork. Complete checklists and perform walk-throughs of all Golf Maintenance service areas to ensure operational efficiency.
Coaching and disciplinary actions: Coach and counsel staff to meet operational standards and maintain a healthy work environment. Report disciplinary issues to the appropriate authorities and contribute to administering disciplinary actions.
Complaint resolution: Address member and staff complaints, collaborate with supervisors, and maintain written records of complaints involving employees.
Safety management: Maintain expertise in club safety policies and procedures. Serve on the Safety committee, conduct monthly safety training, and make recommendations to improve the work environment. Ensure timely accident reporting and compliance with work restrictions.
Reporting and evaluations: Provide required reports such as checklists, schedules, shift reports, and overtime authorizations. Participate in interviewing and evaluating applicants and employees as requested.
Training and documentation: Assist in training new hires and updating employment-related documents. Submit necessary paperwork to HR in a timely manner.
Leadership and values: Lead by example, demonstrating a positive attitude and embodying professionalism, integrity, teamwork, kindness, and gratitude.
Policy understanding and enforcement: Understand and enforce relevant club regulations, policies, and procedures. Ensure team members have a clear understanding of these guidelines.

Service improvement: Identify areas for service improvement and develop creative solutions to address those areas.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
$100,000 - $110,000 per year

Certificate, 2-year, or 4-year degree or certificate from an accredited university
Minimum 3 years of previous experience required, including as a supervisor; experience in a similar luxury environment preferred
Experience with autonomous mowers, GPS Spray Rigs a plus.
Knowledge of pesticide applications, irrigation practices and personnel management.
Must hold a Qualified Applicators Certificate or obtain within 90 days of hire
ABOUT THE CLUB:
In 1920, a foursome at San Gabriel Country Club had this far-fetched notion of wanting to create their own private country club. Samuel M. Newmark, Louis Isaacs, Karl Triest and Joseph Y. Baruh spent several weeks quietly searching for a suitable site and finally came across a charming little parcel of rolling hills on Pico Boulevard, a half day's drive from downtown on an old dusty road, owned at the time by the Huntington Land and Water Company.
Mr. Newmark and Mr. Isaacs paid $5,000 to Mr. Huntington for a purchase option on the land. A Board of Directors was subsequently comprised and authorized the purchase of 142 acres of land at a cost of $50,000 plus the expenditure of an additional $550,000 toward the cost of the golf course and clubhouse construction.
