Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Mechanical Engineering team.

Working at the ALS is an exciting opportunity to be a part of cutting-edge scientific research and engineering innovation in synchrotron x-ray science. This is an exciting position where you will be working with a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to support world class research efforts across a variety of disciplines. You will be working with, developing, and troubleshooting equipment operating under unique environments and will develop the skills to help the ALS achieve its scientific goals. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with ALS staff and manage R&D projects independently.

The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract nearly 1,700 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. In this exciting role, you will perform complex mechanical engineering tasks, including design and development activities in support of specific scientific and engineering programs, taking responsibility for sub-projects and sub-groups within major projects or research programs at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). These activities may include conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and completion of assigned problems, tasks, and projects, which have a high degree of complexity and range in scope. They will need to develop a network of key contacts outside of their own area of expertise to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. The Mechanical Engineer IV determines methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate/supervise activities of other personnel to meet objectives and goals. Moreover, the Mechanical Engineer will conduct, coordinate, and/or make significant contributions to large projects or multiple small projects utilizing independent judgment and decision making while working within schedule and budget constraints.

What You Will Do:

• Serve as Lead Engineer by providing direction and guidance to the engineering team. The team will consist of full-time and part-time subject matter expert engineers to develop detailed engineering plans.
• Closely work with the Engineering leads.
• Provide engineering requirements to the design team.
• Use a broad array of analytical, computational, and experimental, instrumentation, and hardware design skills in the development of detailed designs.
• Independently apply engineering principles, methods and research techniques to creatively solve complex problems based on new technology.
• Establish performance criteria and specifications.
• Release assembly drawings, work instructions, check-lists and other supporting documents to facilitate clear guidelines.
• Write specifications for technically complex or challenging assemblies, procedures, and procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements.
• Provide technical oversight to procurement staff, e.g. technical aspects of drawings, understanding of technical issues; advice on vendor qualifications, and technical details of contract or proposal verbiage.
• Develop project scope and estimate related logistics, e.g. cost estimates and assembly/installation timelines.
• Manage projects of large and medium size in scope, assuming primary responsibility for overall project success, working with project scientists to translate scientific needs into engineering concepts and specifications, overseeing schedule and budget creation and reporting, and providing critical technical direction for development and integration of project components.
• Be responsible for technical efforts to meet project deliverables.
• Supervise other engineers and designers, and serve as mentor to other engineers and technical staff.
• Coordinate and lead a diverse workforce, interface with and oversee an outside contractor work.
• May participate in the management of mid to large-scale DOE capital acquisition construction projects.
• Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in a specific specialty through participation in design reviews.

What is Required:

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering physics, or related field or equivalent experience. Normally 8+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience in managing projects of medium scale.
• Experience in technical management; demonstrated superior design performance and application/development of state-of -the-art technology in relevant engineering areas
• Experience leading and supervising others effectively in a team environment.
• Demonstrated extensive knowledge in engineering integration (mechanical and electrical), mechanical design and fabrication. The lead engineering role is typically acquired with 8+ years of experience.
• Ability to exercise, sound engineering judgment and decision making with a wide range in scope, analytical ability, and evidence of strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
• Broad background in the mechanical engineering and assembly of complex scientific apparatuses and experiments with emphasis on practical hand-on experience on overseeing assembly efforts.
• Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and lead other scientists and engineers in defining goals and implementing activities to realize the goals.
• Demonstrated ability to provide effective engineering direction and judgment for developmental work and to creatively resolve complex technical problems.
• Ability to interface and work within a large diverse team and will require excellent technical communication skills.
• Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects. Demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience accelerator or complex scientific experiment engineering design, and mechanical issues and manufacturing thereof.
• Demonstrated ability to make accurate manpower, time and expense estimates for completion of projects.
• Ability to interface with facilities and contractors to ensure code compliance for seismic bracing, electrical installation, and drill permits.

Desired Qualifications:

• M.S. or Ph.D. or equivalent experience.
• Experience in a R&D and national laboratory environment.
• Previous experience with large scale installations and/or operations and maintenance of large user facilities, complex experiments or industrial installations.
• Adaptability and desire to learn new skills and technologies.

Salary:
The full salary range of this position is between $11,085 to $18,707 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $12,472 to $15,242 per month depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

• This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
