Description of Duties
This is a mandatory position and is required to report to work in the event of an emergency closing; adverse weather; or a public health emergency.
This position reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor to provide and assist in the general electrical maintenance of the electrical systems on campus and is considered as journeyman level work in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Work assignments are received from a supervisor, are performed independently and in accordance with accepted trade policies. This position requires occasional overtime and on-call duty. The essential tasks include, but not limited to the following:
Serve as technical lead for all electrical installation and repair on the Durham campus
Maintain and repair all electrical distribution and panel equipment
Installation of all new and electrical equipment as needed
Maintain all switchgear and electric motors
Make all preventative maintenance as needed on all electrical systems and related items
Serve as shop lead for the electrical department
Installation of conduit and pull electrical, data, and telephone lines as needed
Electrical work and lighting for new in-house construction projects
Inspect building electrical systems on a daily basis
Maintain emergency back-up generators
Ensure electrical systems and panels are code compliant
Schedule shutdowns and maintenance items with supervisor
Complete daily work orders as required
Provide reports on safety items and work status
Coordinates with other facilities and operations staff and contractors in determining complex electrical needs and repairs
Performs PM task as per manufacturer recommended schedule
Continually evaluates PM task and forwards recommendations to supervisor
Performs weekly PM inspections and identifies and records any deficiencies found
Communicate with customers on any electrical related problems in their areas and provides status updates
Develops a good working relationship with customers
Identifies facilities-related electrical problems that require in-depth analysis and identifies options for solving those problems
Solve unusual facility electrical problems that require the application of journey level trades knowledge and determines the most effective and efficient course of action
Gathers and analyzes/interprets information to better understand the nature of the problem
Evaluates options and chooses appropriate action by considering potential outcomes. Makes sure that problem is appropriately addressed
Ensures all work meets and/or exceeds applicable codes and standards
Electrical Shop Coordination
Provide list of materials to keep in inventory stock for electrical shop
Maintain Electrical Shop and provide recommendations
Graduation from high school or equivalent; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred: 3 years experience working in the electrical field. NC Electrical Contractors License required or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Must have a valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions.
