Responsibilities:
Working under general supervision, these employees perform journey level work involved with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment and if permitted, new construction and remodels. They may work alone or as part of a crew depending on the work assignment. Assignments are normally received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions. Routine work is performed independently and is inspected in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications. Direction is received from a Journeyman High Volt Electrician, Lead Person or Supervisor.
An Electrician Maintenance person does not perform tasks that require a qualified High Voltage Electrician, unless specifically trained and under the direct supervisor of High Voltage Electrician Specialist, Lead Person or Supervisor.
An Electrician Maintenance person will always perform tasks in accordance with Stanford and departmental administrative and safety standards, especially the Stanford Electric Safety and Operations Program (ESOP).
Electrician Maintenance person uses tools, material, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by Stanford appropriately and as directed in the performance of work at all times.
Characteristic Duties:
Maintains light and power circuits, elevators, controls, electric motors of various sizes and types, lighting fixtures, transformers, communications systems, standby battery power circuits and equipment, making repairs as necessary
Tests as necessary for short circuits, grounds, and other electrical disorders and takes corrective measures as indicated
Installs new circuits and equipment
Installs conduits, wires, cables, pull boxes, transformers, switches and other related equipment required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems, or in new construction, if permitted
Repairs and replaces defective parts in motors, generators, pumps, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers, switches, and other related equipment
Repairs hand tools
Troubleshoots 1 and 3 phase motors and related equipment
Uses a variety of tools and instruments such as hand tools of the trade, voltmeter, ohmmeter, current meter, motor analyzer, megger, hydraulic bending equipment, motorized cable pulling equipment, etc.
May perform above functions on systems connected with higher energy particle accelerators or other equipment
Test and repairs short-circuit, grounds, lamps, poles, and troubleshoots street light circuits
Responds to power outages during off-hours on a call back basis
May use a computer to meet operational needs
Performs switching and maintenance in machinery rooms, buildings, substations, switchyards, pad-mounted equipment and in underground vaults
Ensures that safety rules are followed
Qualifications:
The work requires a thorough knowledge of practical electrical theory and the ability to construct and read wiring diagrams. These employees must have a working knowledge of the theory of operations of various types of communications systems, motors, illumination systems, power systems, heating appliances and other electrical equipment. Must have knowledge of National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards on electrical and work safety procedures. This skill level is generally associated with a minimum of 4-5 years of experience in the trade.
They must be able to make repairs on all equipment encountered, to diagnose electrical trouble, and to make new installations with a minimum of supervision and technical advice. They must be willing to work in restricted spaces and high places. Electrician Maintenance must be a qualified journey electrician and have work experience in electrical construction (if permitted) and the installation, maintenance, and operations of a wide variety of electrical equipment such as that described above. May need to be able to use a computer in the course of their work. Must possess a valid California driver's license and a good driving record. Must be available to work overtime and available for callbacks.
