The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world. SIO operates three major seagoing research vessels, which conduct physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of oceans worldwide. Scripps oceanographic research vessels make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world. Scripps ships have state-of-the-art research instruments to study marine life, the oceans, the seafloor, and the atmosphere. Cruises vary from local trips to expeditions for as long as six years. Scripps research ships, available to scientists worldwide, have steamed more than six million nautical miles in support of science and the academic community.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the general supervision of the Chief Engineer, the electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing shipboard electrical and electronic equipment. The electrician may perform Oiler duties and/or those of Oiler watchstanders and stand security watches in port. The electrician will perform other duties as defined by a ship's senior officer during emergencies, facilitate and support the scientific mission of each cruise, and comply with, participate in, and promote the vessel's safety management program.

High school education and/or equivalent such as a GED.
Proven skills as an electrician, especially in areas of troubleshooting, new installations, and upkeep of existing equipment. Demonstrated knowledge and experience to identify all marine electrical/electronic equipment and its condition to justify maintenance or replacement.
Proven ability to use standard office software applications, inventory and database management systems to maintain records.
Experience reading blueprints and electrical/electronic schematics of all electrical and electronic equipment on board.
Thorough knowledge of seamanship practices, general shipboard maintenance, and care, and operation of deck equipment. Includes, but is not limited to: knots, line handling, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of winches, etc.
Demonstrated skills as an Oiler, including familiarity with various engine room-related equipment, including experience accurately reading gauges for oil, fuel, and water levels, temperatures, and pressures.
Demonstrated basic math skills that include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and performing percentage calculations, fractions, and decimals with or without a calculator or computer.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time.
Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing.
U.S. Passport required.
Must be able to maintain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC) with Oiler and Electrician endorsement.
Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Pay Transparency Act Full Salary Range: $77,841 - $113,378 Annually
