The Lighting and Audio Technician provides production support primarily to the Theatre program and occasionally to the Film program. In addition, the Technician is also a part of a team of Performing Arts Technicians that serves and supports other performing arts disciplines in the College, such as Dance, Music and special events. Taking lead direction from the Technical Production Manager, work assignments/schedules from the Coordinator of Production, and receiving specific artistic direction from Faculty and guest Designers, and Theatrical Directors, the Lighting and Audio Technician requires general supervision and works independently to achieve specified outcomes. The Technician specializes in audio and electrical lighting systems, sound reinforcement and playback, and is responsible for the execution of lighting, projection, and sound for the University Dance Theater as well as other Music, Dance, Theater and Film spaces as assigned. As the primary lighting and audio technician and chief electrical safety officer for Dance and Music, the Technician must follow the National Electrical Code and California Title 8 (California OSHA) safety requirements for electrical installations. The Audio and Lighting Technician works from verbal and written instructions and is responsible for the organization of projects, as well as managing parts and supplies for all audio, lighting, and projection equipment. The Lighting and Audio Technician will work closely with student crews, train students to run Audio and Lighting boards, work with Audio & Lighting equipment safely, and supervise student assistants. The Lighting and Audio Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, repairing, and performing regular maintenance on lighting, projection, sound, and special effects equipment, as well as maintaining a proper inventory of all expendables such as lamps, cables, gaff tape, and more. The Technician will at various times design the sound and lighting for studio and/or smaller productions, as well as support the productions of the student clubs in the programs. Using creativity, ingenuity, technical abilities, and knowledge of production goals and themes, the Audio and Lighting Technician creates, implements, and fabricates lighting, projection, sound, and special effects from designer and director specifications. The venues of performance spaces that the Lighting and Audio Technician will support include, but are not limited to; University Theatre, Hal Todd Theatre, Hammer Theatre, Dance Theatre, Morris Dailey Auditorium, Dance Studios, Music Concert Hall, Music Rehearsal Studios, campus outdoor venues, and on-location film sets.
