Position Purpose:
This position is responsible for the development, maintenance, and communication of an effective safety program at Laramie River Station (LRS) to prevent accidents, injuries, occupational illnesses, and property damage in accordance with the safety policies and procedures of Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC). The incumbent also performs special projects during outages and as assigned. In addition, this position provides technical assistance to the supervisor; and plans, organizes, and oversees the safety training of all LRS plant personnel, as prescribed, for the safe and efficient operation of LRS.
Qualifications:
To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent must have a working knowledge of safety and loss prevention management, state and federal Occupational Health & Safety Association (OSHA) regulations, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes, fire prevention, workers compensation compliance, and basic industrial hygiene concepts. This is acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in safety management, industrial hygiene, or related field and three years of related safety experience in an industrial setting; a two-year degree in a safety related field with five years of related safety experience in an industrial setting; or a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and seven years of related safety experience in an industrial facility. In the first two years in this position, the incumbent will need to secure and maintain a current Industrial Hygiene Management Certificate (or equivalent, such as Industrial Hygiene Safety and Health Specialist Certificate, or Industrial Hygiene Certificate), Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist, Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) accredited Asbestos Building Inspector Course, Lead Inspector, American Heart Association Heartsaver Instructor certification, OSHA 30-hour General Industry training, respirator fit testing training, taproot investigation training. The incumbent must have the ability to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong negotiation and organizational skills, must have strong interpersonal skills; proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel; and must have a valid driver’s license.
Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:
This position requires frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, reaching/lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, using keyboard/computer. Good reading, writing and math skills, and the ability to analyze data and reports, conduct research and implement recommendations are required. This position works with tools, video equipment, cameras, computers, safety equipment/devices. Working conditions for this position can include, dirt/dust, vapors/fumes, extreme heat/cold, vibration and noise; and occasionally poor ventilation and electrical risks. The incumbent will occasionally be required to work at heights up to 350 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. The position requires inspection/testing of boiler/ environmental areas, and work in confined spaces. This position also requires good color vision, finger dexterity, hand coordination, the ability to perform close work, and good hearing. The incumbent must be respirator qualified and able to operate a motor vehicle.
