Accountabilities:
The Journeyperson Electrician, having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge, is responsible for installing, wiring, trouble shooting, and repairing all electrical apparatus and equipment on campus in accordance with standard rules and regulations governing such work.
Duties and accountabilities include:
- Install, service and maintain electrical switch gear, branch circuits, variable frequency drives, controls, fire detection systems, data wiring, system clocks, and electrical appliances.
- Assess, inspect documents, and recommend electrical upgrades, as needed.
- Read, interpret relevant specifications from blueprints or schematics, applying electrical codes, executing material estimates and orders, then translating knowledge into a finished project for assigned projects.
- Respond to electrical service calls, covering athletic events, concerts, special events and preventive maintenance on EM lighting, VFDs and generators.
- Proficient in using the tools required to complete the work.
- Maintain a spirit of cooperation, exercising self-discipline, diplomacy and tact in dealing with all university personnel.
- Work closely with campus customers to understand their needs, to coordinate and schedule work and close out jobs.
- Oversee outside contractors work to ensure Colgate standards are met and oversee apprentices and/or summer and casual wage hires.
- Recording work order entries (material and labor) in a timely and accurate manner.
- Working independently, without direct supervision, and coordinating work with others
Professional Experience/Qualifications:
- Commercial/Industrial electrical experience in single and three-phase power related to 120-208v and 277-480v systems, knowledge of the National Electrical Code along with strong electronic control troubleshooting skills required.
- Experience with the installation and repair of commercial and residential fire alarm systems required.
- A commitment to abide by Colgate's health and safety protocols and local, state, and federal regulations are required.
- Experience interacting with team members and other campus constituents with a positive attitude.
- Experience working independently, as well as part of a team and coordinating work with others.
- Must have basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Gmail, FAMIS and the ability to use computer programs to complete work order entries, material procurement, estimating, and other shop related activity.
- Able to work nights, weekends and holidays, as may be required.
- Requires excellent customer service skills.
- Must be capable of working in a setting with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and visitors on a daily basis.
- Must be able and capable of learning new techniques and current electrical codes.
At least one of the following required:
- Certification from a four or five year accredited commercial/industrial electrical apprenticeship program that includes both work and classroom experience;
- Graduation from accredited commercial/industrial electrical trade school plus 2 consecutive years of journeyperson electrician field experience;
- Proof of 5 consecutive years as a journeyperson electrician in the field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Simplex & Advanced fire detection systems highly desirable.
- Knowledge or certification in NFPA 70E and Lockout/Tagout safety highly desirable.
Education:
High school degree/GED or a combination of education and experience from which comparable skills are attained required. A Trade school degree is desirable.

Physical Demands:
- Ability to perform work using aerial and single person vertical lifts.
- In the framework of normal operations, the Journeyperson Electrician may be exposed to electrical hazards and is expected to comply with NFPA 70E and Colgate Electrical Safety Program.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, as well as stoop, bend, reach and climb.
- Must have the ability to lift and carry up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
- Will be required to wear a NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Health & Safety) approved respirator and personal protective equipment, which may include a flame resistant uniform (as defined by NFPA-70E).
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions as needed.
- Exposure to heights, high speed power tools, and outdoor work throughout the year.
- Responsible for following all procedures to conduct work activities in a safe manner including but not limited to wearing PPE required for specific duties and safe handling of chemicals as outlined by University policies and/or the supervisor. Responsible for immediately reporting any unsafe conditions to the supervisor and/or Environmental Health and Safety.
