The Missouri Institute for Defense & Energy (MIDE) at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) is seeking applicants for a Senior Research Specialist to manage laboratory functions and perform a variety of materials characterization and development operations. A successful candidate will excel at working with both internal and external customers to ensure their testing and development requests are completed in a timely fashion while managing some of the day to day operations of multiple laboratories specializing in everything from surface analysis to electrical testing.
In this position the candidate can expect to perform a variety of materials characterization techniques on a multitude everything from ceramics and polymers to metals. On a daily basis the candidate will interact with customers internal to UMKC/MIDE and external to the University to refine their requests ensuring 100% satisfaction with the results of the work.
Ensuring laboratory equipment is operational and calibrated
Inventory lab supplies and consumables weekly to ensure availability frequently used items
Following up with students and staff to make sure regular maintenance and service is performed on equipment as needed
Developing/Providing/Tracking user training for laboratory equipment
Performing a variety of chemical, electrical, and physical characterization/development processes based on client requests
Communicating with leadership to define laboratory needs and direction
Summarizing and writing/reviewing final reports for client projects
Executing on other laboratory based projects as directed by supervisor
Ensuring lab compliance with OSHA, EPA, EHS and other regulatory agencies as needed
A Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, or related field with 3 years of experience performing chemical formulation, materials science/characterization, and/or 3 years of graduate experience in a chemistry or fundamental materials science laboratory.
Master's degree in chemistry or materials science with proven experience using and maintaining a variety of chemical and materials characterization techniques that may include Raman/FTIR spectroscopy, impedance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Other materials characterization techniques and a focus on developing chemistry processes are acceptable.

Salary Range $47,476 - $56,936 annually
