The Facilities Electrician will install, test, operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, maintain and service Laboratory electrical equipment, including initiating and coordinating repairs by other crafts as required to maintain equipment viability comprising the Laboratory's electrical distribution systems, building utility support systems; also responsible for the installation and modification of building office and research work areas.
Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab's mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.
Perform troubleshooting and repairs of complex control systems, such as building energy management systems and variable frequency drives.
Install, connect, test, operate, modify, repair and replace circuit breakers, controls, fuses, lighting fixtures, motors, outlets, signaling devices, switches, thermostats, timers, and other wiring devices. Test, operate, calibrate, adjust, clean, service and repair electrical components and systems. Update prints and equipment history/service records.
Fabricate component parts, assemblies, and chassis; place and terminate various types of busses, cables, conductors and wires. Shape, join, place and anchor various types of cableways, raceways, enclosures and wire ways.
Interpret prints, wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
Use knowledge of the National Electric Code and LBL specifications for compliant installations and NFPA 70E for safe work practices.
Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property and notify the MRO management team.
May be required to work extended workday/week assignments and be available to respond to emergency callbacks. May be required to support planned/emergency work on weekends/holidays.
May be required to assist High Voltage Electricians to support planned/emergency work.
Perform all work in a safe manner; promote health and safety in the workplace; protect the environment.
Comply with LBL implementation of DOE health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention, and environmental protection policies.
Ensure that all unique activities that involve potentially hazardous conditions are carried out in conformance with a current Operational Safety Procedure (OSP) to ensure that risks are acceptable.
Ensure that personal exposure to toxic chemicals, ionizing radiation, and contaminants is maintained within prescribed standards and is as low as reasonably achievable.
Minimize the volume and toxicity of all LBL-generated wastes and maintain chemical inventories as low as reasonably achievable.
Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property and notify the appropriate supervisor and, when appropriate, the building manager and when appropriate the Environmental Safety Hazards Control Department.
Report promptly and correct when appropriate any hazardous conditions that are discovered.
Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in industrial electrical maintenance or installation, equivalent accredited military, vocational, commercial, trade training program in the electrical field, and a minimum of four years journey-level industrial maintenance/installation experience, including maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and repair of electrical distribution, switchgear and protective devices in an operating chemical, power, processing, industrial service, manufacturing plant or equivalent military plant environment.
State Certified Electrician or ability to become a CA Certified Electrician within 12 months of hire.
Experience in field installation/shop maintenance of electrical equipment including troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of motors, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control systems.
Able to use portable and fixed drills, saws, grinders, and sanders.
Ability to perform tasks safely and efficiently under minimal supervision.
Demonstrated experience applying NFPA 70E as it pertains to Qualified Electrical Workers and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269 with regards to Safe Work Practices and worker safety.
Working knowledge and experience following the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable codes regarding electrical construction techniques, maintenance, and repair of building facilities equipment and machinery.
Working knowledge of applicable ANSI, IEEE, IEC, NETA-MTS, UL and other standards for electrical/mechanical equipment.
Knowledge of proper termination requirements for a wide variety of electrical outlets, switches, motors, transformers, controls, and lighting devices. Must be able to sketch interconnecting wiring and schematic diagrams to document fabrications and installations.
Possession of excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and listening skills for working in a diverse team environment, and the ability to clearly communicate over the telephone and two-way radio.
Demonstrated proficiency/experience using metering devices such as continuity testers, voltage indicators, ammeters and multimeters to measure resistance, amperage, voltage.
Proven record of effective customer service skills
Possession of a valid California license.
Experience using computers for record-keeping and communication; ability to quickly write presentable reports and memoranda using a computer.
Physical requirements including the ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding and to work at heights. Ability to use various types of man lifts. Ability to work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under fluorescent lighting. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl; manual dexterity in both hands; ability to lift weights up to 50lbs.
Must be available to respond to emergencies during off-hours including weekends and holidays.
Must be able to perform work in a safe and efficient manner with minimal supervision.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
NFPA CESW Certified.
Experience maintaining and installing building automation systems, boilers, boiler controls, and lighting controls.
Experience with research equipment.
Previous work experience with energy management control systems.
Previous experience as a Service Technician for Energy Management or Lighting Control Systems in LEED buildings.
